Repertory Opera Company continues its fourth season in Pomona with La Traviata, the most popular and accessible of Verdi’s masterpieces and perhaps of all opera with Musical Director Brian Farrell at the piano.
Step into the glamorous, secretive demimonde of the 1860 Parisian salons, where the sparkling courtesan Violetta Valéry holds court among the Barons, Marquis and other beautiful people. Then she meets the loving and earnest Alfredo Germont. She tries to create a new life with him, but she cannot escape her past. Heroically, but tragically, she sacrifices her one chance at happiness.
Verdi’s memorable score positively glows with poignant preludes, inspired ensembles, and marvelously crafted duets. The story inspired many versions on stage and screen including Camille, a 1936 Academy Award nominated film starring Greta Garbo and Robert Taylor and the 2001 Oscar-winning film, Moulin Rouge!
