March 2017 - Letter from the Chair

I’ll just start this newsletter by saying ‘Congratulations!’ For what now, to whom? Well, to all of us at the Chamber for creating a new event, the Best BET Bash, and pulling it off successfully! It is never easy to first come up with an idea for an event, considering all the ‘who-what-where-when’ questions that must be satisfied and then the actual stitching it all together. We had many fine individuals help in the stitching and vendors donating so that everyone who attended enjoyed the evening. We

Court Blocks Federal Overtime Rule

Last week, a federal court in Texas issued a nationwide preliminary injunction blocking the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) from enforcing the new federal overtime rule which was set to take effect on December 1. The federal overtime rule has been controversial, as it more than doubled the current federal salary level that must be met before an employee can be classified as exempt from overtime under one of the so-called white-collar exemptions (the executive, administrative and professional exemptions).

Some Parts of New Federal Overtime Rule Don’t Apply in California - CalChamber Alert

Can California employers count bonuses and commissions toward the new federal salary requirement? Can employees in California be classified as exempt under the “highly compensated employee” exemption? No, and no. Neither of these two provisions of the new federal overtime rule—which raises the federal salary test for the executive, administrative and professional exemptions to $913 per week ($47,476 annually) effective December 1, 2016—apply to California employees.

November Letter from our Chair

As I compose this November Newsletter, Village Venture has yet to happen, but I am certain it was a success! They always are and look very easy but they take an enormous amount of time, planning and precise execution to achieve that impression. Thanks to Maureen, Marlene and Jose for this year’s production. Volunteering was way down this year, (yeah, like my Newsletter nagging made any difference), but volunteering appears down in numbers for many events with as many reasons. Such is life!
